Statement on Academic and Operational Excellence

Tallahassee State College is committed to providing an affordable, rigorous, and high-quality education that prepares students to succeed in further education, meaningful careers, and service to their communities.

In response to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Call to Action on academic and operational excellence, TSC reaffirms the principles that have long guided our work: academic rigor, transparency, accountability, student success, responsible stewardship of public resources, and responsiveness to the workforce needs of Florida and the nation.

As a member of the Florida College System, TSC is proud to join Florida’s public colleges and universities in demonstrating these commitments through measurable results and continuous improvement.

Transparency and Student Access

TSC provides students and families with clear information about admission requirements, academic programs, costs, financial aid, transfer opportunities, and career pathways so they can make informed decisions about their education.

As an open-access institution, the College creates opportunities for students from a wide range of educational backgrounds while maintaining clearly defined academic requirements and expectations for progression and completion. Our goal is not simply to provide access to college, but to help students turn that access into meaningful credentials, degrees, transfer opportunities, and careers.

Free Expression and Open Inquiry

TSC supports the free exchange of ideas, thoughtful discussion, and respectful intellectual inquiry as essential elements of higher education.

The College protects lawful expression while maintaining an environment in which students, faculty, and staff can learn and work safely. TSC expects members of the College community to engage with differing perspectives in ways that allow instruction, College operations, events, and other activities to continue without disruption.

Academic Excellence and Intellectual Vitality

Academic excellence begins with qualified faculty, rigorous curricula, meaningful assessment, and a commitment to student learning.

TSC hires and evaluates faculty based on professional qualifications, expertise, performance, institutional needs, and applicable requirements. Within the classroom, students are encouraged to examine evidence, consider different perspectives, think critically, communicate effectively, and reach informed conclusions.

The College regularly evaluates its academic programs to ensure they remain relevant, rigorous, and aligned with expectations for transfer, employment, licensure, and continued education.

Affordability, Value, and Student Outcomes

Providing an exceptional education at an affordable cost is central to TSC’s mission.

TSC works to keep higher education within reach while helping students complete their programs efficiently and with as little debt as possible. The College provides clear information about tuition, fees, financial aid, and program requirements and continually evaluates programs, services, and operations to ensure responsible use of public resources.

Our focus remains on the outcomes that matter most to students: completing a credential, transferring successfully, entering a rewarding career, and improving their economic opportunity.

Academic Rigor in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, create new opportunities for teaching and learning while also requiring colleges to protect the integrity of the educational process.

TSC is committed to using technology responsibly while maintaining high academic standards. Faculty establish expectations for student work and assessment appropriate to their disciplines, and students are expected to demonstrate authentic learning, critical thinking, and mastery of course outcomes.

The College will continue to help faculty and students understand the appropriate and ethical use of artificial intelligence while ensuring that technology enhances, rather than replaces, meaningful teaching and learning.

Institutional Integrity and Accountability

TSC is committed to strong institutional governance, responsible stewardship, transparency, and compliance with state and federal requirements designed to protect the integrity of public higher education.

The College maintains policies and processes to safeguard institutional resources, academic programs, partnerships, information, and operations. TSC will continue to comply with applicable requirements concerning foreign gifts, agreements, research, information security, and other activities that could affect the integrity or security of the institution.

Meeting Florida’s Workforce Needs

One of TSC’s most important responsibilities is preparing students for the needs of Florida’s communities and economy.

The College works closely with employers, industry partners, educational institutions, and community leaders to ensure academic and workforce programs respond to areas of demand. From healthcare, education, business, and technology to public safety, skilled trades, transportation, and other high-demand fields, TSC continually evaluates opportunities to connect education with employment.

TSC also provides pathways for students who plan to continue their education, serving as a leading transfer institution and preparing students to succeed at Florida’s universities and beyond.

Our responsibility is ultimately measured by the success of the students and communities we serve. Tallahassee State College will continue to hold itself accountable for delivering rigorous academics, affordable pathways, strong student outcomes, and programs that contribute to Florida’s workforce and economic prosperity.

At TSC, excellence is not simply an aspiration. It is a commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to earn a high-quality education that leads somewhere meaningful.
